Java è GPL2!

L’avevavamo pre-annunciato giorni fa ed è avvuto: SUN ha annunciato al mondo che Java fa ufficialmente parte della famiglia del Free Software.

Non tutto il codice di Java è stato comunque reso opensource, infatti alcuni elementi come il ClassPath vedranno la licenza GPL solo più avanti nel tempo. Resta comunque un grande passo fatta da un’azienda che ha, negli ultimi anni, donato moltissimo al mondo dell’OSS.

Adesso aspetto l’inclusione di Java in tutte quelle distribuzioni che necessitavano l’utilizzo di repository separati…

Q: What is Sun announcing?
A: Sun is open sourcing all of its Java platform implementations under same license (called GPL Version 2) used by the GNU/Linux operating system.

Specifically Sun is announcing:

* GPL v2 license for Sun’s Java SE (JDK) and Java ME implementations, and adding this license to Sun’s Java EE implementation.
* First release of code for the JDK and for Sun’s Java ME implementation, projects and communities.
* Roadmap for future code releases and community development.

This singular act is the largest contribution ever made to the free software community, and places Sun squarely at the front of the open-source movement - as the single biggest commercial contributor.

    Ottimo.
    Oltre ad essere un grande passo avanti verso l’idea di Software libero, riduce molti dei problemi che si avevano da parte della GPL nel caso qualcuno avesse idea di sviluppare software in Java sotto quella licenza.
